We design great website that are easy to use, easily found, fast and functional.
We maintain an integrated development methodology (we work together). It is a defined procedural approach to development (each step follows the previous step) so that everything is done in sequence to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the deliverables. This way you can enjoy working with us because we know what we’re doing and it works. It also means we don’t miss anything out, or have to redo aspects out of sequence as new requests arrive. Although this does sometimes arise which is inevitable, our flexible and agile approach enables us to handle these occurrences with a minimum of disturbance to project plans and time-frames.
Anyone who has lost track of time when using a computer knows the propensity to dream, the urge to make dreams come true and the tendency to miss lunch.
Tim Berners-Lee (The father/inventor of the web)
The discovery enables us to define what is needed and wanted. In this phase, we work with you to understand what you are looking for. We closely examine the situation, the market and your proposition to develop a solution that solves your needs and wants; discovering your functionality requirements and establishing marketing goals. Once the focus is set, strategic goals are developed along with the project plan and phases of development.
We ask you questions. It sounds obvious but we have found this to be an important aspect to requirements gathering. We don’t assume you know what is available but you know what your goals are. We don’t assume you know all the answers but that is why we are there to listen, consult and advise. We listen for the words that get repeated, or phrases that are spoken with passion. You know your business, you know your competition, and you know the challenges facing your brand. Through interviews and discussions, we find truths and identify the challenges to be addressed.
During the architecture phase we develop the visual language, the systems requirements, the information architecture (IA) and technological architecture for the project. We pay close attention the the user perspective, developing user persona’s to profile your audience groups, mapping their journeys to the defined IA ensuring seamless journeys. We can then choose the appropriate technologies and implementation schemes for the project.
Inspiration is the guiding light to creative visions, and we’re inspired.
The creation phase is where our team develops their magic. Good design is the foundation of brand perception and usability it is not simply cosmetic. By using the detailed architecture phase, we unleash our creative talents and imagination upon the project, working towards the goal of a successful solution to enhance and promote your brand values and identity. Ideas evolve from the seeds of creative input, through mood boards and wireframes (detailing front end design layouts and content placeholders) through sketches and design concepts to the final designs lovingly created to invigorate you brand online.
Consistency leads to clarity and clarity is vital for focused and effective communication, letting your brand speak for itself.
Following your final approval of the previous phase. Our design and development team work diligently to build your solution to specification. The implementation phase is where we put all of the pieces together in the primary project deliverable’s.
We follow a progressive enhancement approach to developing websites to ensure that content is accessible to the widest possible number of browsers, devices and users. This approach to web development works by building your site in layers:
Planet Interactive produces standards compliant websites. This enables faster development and more importantly greater flexibility and development opportunities.
“Adding standards compliance to your requirements helps achieve a more powerful, accessible, and maintainable final product, and leverages the energies put into standards.”
Given that each project has several unique factors associated with it, our information architects, designers, and developers have evolved a flexible perspective to our agile methodologies when required, to ensure the building of your custom solution. As such we have mastered the ability to deliver on time and within budget by tightly integrating our design and development efforts within every client engagement.
Depending on client requirements we develop Content Management Systems (CMS) using open source or commercial technologies; ensuring it is the correct technology for the project and for you.
We are committed to building accessible websites available to all. Our design and development practices are focused towards achieving this goal. All new projects are built with reference to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, with the aim of achieving Level AA conformance, which ensures compliance to government guidelines but adds flexibility to deliver inspiring and interactive solutions. We also provide guidance to our clients who develop their own content to ensure they have the working knowledge to promote accessibility in their content creation.
Why is it important?
Making websites accessible is essentially about taking measures to ensure that people with disabilities are able to use them successfully. Often, due to the nature of their disability, and/or the technology it necessitates them to use, people can find using websites very difficult or even impossible. This is particularly disappointing, since, when websites are built in a way that removes these challenges, they offer many people with disabilities the possibility of unprecedented access to information and communication.
Access for all
People who have disabilities, directly affecting the way in which they can access the Web, make up a significant proportion of a websites’ potential audience. It is also worth noting that, with an ageing population, this proportion is likely to keep increasing. Making a website accessible, is important for reaching the widest possible audience, and has other benefits too.
Many of the HTML elements that are important for accessibility, such as page titles, page headings and links are also used by search engines to determine the content of the pages they index. Using them correctly, not only improves accessibility, but can help give prominence to keywords and key phrases. Furthermore, other parts of a web page that can cause problems for people with disabilities, such as images, audio and video are invisible to search engines. Providing alternative text content for such things, makes them available to everyone and also means they can be indexed.
The Disability Rights Commission found (in 2004 study) that web content optimised for accessibility can also be used more effectively and more successfully by people without disabilities.
Since 1999 there has been a legal duty, first under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and subsequently under the Equality Act, to take steps to make websites accessible.
It is also of note that public sector website owners must develop an accessibility policy according to section 6 of PAS 78, ‘Defining the accessibility policy for the website’.
Following the completion of the design and development phases. Our efforts continue into the validation and certification phase. A temporary URL or suitable distribution method is established, and along with you the client, our team carefully analyse the project deliverables to ensure that it achieves the goals outlined during the architecture phase. We constantly test throughout development but this phase is specific to involving you the client and ensures we don’t miss an opportunity to innovate and crush those final bugs.
Cross-Browser Testing & Fixing
The Internet is a free for all of technology, not just in the development of applications and software but in how your users, customers and clients interact with the web. There is a plethora of Internet browsers (software to view the web) provided free with your computers operating system and available to download on the web. What your customers are using cannot be guaranteed so it is important to ensure your website is developed to display correctly and importantly work on the vast majority available.
We ensure all out products are tested across the major operating systems (Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac) and the major players in the Internet browsing market namely Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera. We test against the most recent versions as well as the major previous released versions (because not all users upgrade). For established websites requiring fixing or redesigning it is best to use the sites analytics (from your websites user statistics) to gauge your specific users browser requirements data for a full and detailed picture.
This phase relies entirely upon your acceptance of the beta tested solution and your certification that we have built to specification. Therefore, no product is complete until you, the client, attests to its merit. Once acceptance has been given, our build team is put back into action once more to handle the particulars of your launch. We can also provide shared hosting solutions or advise on bespoke dedicated solutions.
We build partnerships and lasting relationships with our clients. We are always on hand when required, reviewing past efforts and deliverables to refine and improve on previous or new technologies and solutions available.
